Eat some Insects! February 13, 2019

A United Nations report says it’s important that we eat insects, giving three reasons why. The first reason is that insects are healthy, nutritious alternatives to mainstream staples. The second reason is that they are better for the environment than cows, sheep and other animals. Finally, the report says insect farming would help poor families around the world eat and start small businesses. Interesting! But Jesus presents the best diet of all. He said, “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God. “ A Bible study diet will reveal that we are all spiritual paupers, but we will also learn of God’s grace to forgive and fit us for heaven.

Discovery February 11, 2019

Discovery Channel is an American television network founded in 1985 by John Hendricks. It has produced many interesting discovery type films such as Black Sky and The Race for Space. The word “discovery” means “to learn, find or see for the first time.” From the dawn of human history, the challenge of discovering new frontiers has captivated every generation. For example, anaesthesia- is the artificially induced insensibility to pain. It was discovered by Sir James Simpson. On one occasion the brilliant man was asked, “what is your greatest discovery?” He replied “that I am a sinner and that Jesus Christ is my Saviour.” Are we as smart as Sir James Simpson? Have we made the discovery that we too are sinners and need a Saviour?

God is not Partial February 8, 2019

MLA Kathleen Casey believes newcomers are being discriminated against on PEI. One in ten Prince Edward Islanders report having experienced racial discrimination in their lifetime. This is surprising, in a day when there so much opposition to discrimination against minorities. This discrimination is in stark contrast to the attitude of our Heavenly Father. Paul the Apostle wrote “there is no partiality with God.” The book of Revelation, described a company of forgiven people as “…a great multitude which no one could number, of all nations, tribes, peoples, and tongues…” And the book of Romans states God’s promise that “whoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

Knowing the Creator February 6, 2019

Last month, China landed a Rover spaceship on the far side of the moon. The USA has put the Mars Rover on the red planet. There is great interest in learning more of our universe. But do we know the Creator of Mars and the moon? The Prophet Isaiah invites “Lift up your eyes…see Who has created these things…the everlasting God, the Lord, the Creator of the ends of the earth…” Sincere seekers can personally know the Creator by acknowledging that “There is none righteous no not one,” and entering into a personal relationship with Jesus because He said, “I and the Father are one.” But He also said,“ No one comes to the Father except through me.”

Unashamed February 4, 2019

Students at the University of California were asked to submit a short statement to be read before they received their degrees. Christiana Popa’s statement read in part, “I want to thank my Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.” The student affairs advisor for the department objected and asked her to substitute “I want to thank God.” When Ms. Popa protested, the administration told her the only other option would be to forgo any statement. Surprisingly, later, the decision was reversed. Christiana was permitted to thank Jesus. It was important for her because she knew Jesus had said, “I am the way, the truth and the life, no one comes to the Father except through me.” Let’ salute Christiana, for standing up for the Saviour of the world.

Permanence amid Change February 1, 2019

Someone once wrote, “Change and decay in all around I see.” As an example, the year 1934 was not very long ago in terms of history but price comparisons between then and now are startling. Here are a few. In 1934, the average yearly income was sixteen hundred dollars. You could purchase a new car for six hundred and twenty-five dollars. A gallon of gas cost ten cents, a pound of coffee was thirty-five cents and you could purchase a new home for less than six thousand dollars. Changes today in science, medicine and life in general are mind boggling. How comforting for those who have Christ in their lives, to know that the Heavenly Father never changes, and His Word never changes. He said, “I am the Lord, I change not.” The New Testament assures us that “Jesus Christ is the same, yesterday, today and forever.”

Two Kinds of Power January 31, 2019

“Absolute power corrupts absolutely” is the best-known quotation of the 19th century British politician Lord Acton. There is nothing new about hunger for power and its devastating results. Often leaders become “drunk with power.” Author John Piper wrote, “God made man small and the universe big to say something about Himself. “As powerful as leaders may think they are, compared to God, they are very weak. Paul reminds us that “the gospel of Christ is the power of God unto salvation.“ We lack the power to prepare for the next life. But in Christ, through His death on the old rugged cross, God makes available the “power of God” which leads to the salvation of our never-dying soul

Make-believe Worlds January 30, 2019

A high school in Bedfordshire, England has a policy of not correcting any more than three spelling errors in a student’s work, fearful that this would damage their self image. It seems we will go to any length to pretend unpleasantness does not exist. We pretend that sin is just a mistake. We pretend there is no God. We pretend that death ends all. But truth is never changed by putting our heads in the sand. Paul the Apostle warned, “Be not deceived, God is not mocked. For whatever a man sows, that he shall also reap.” One Old Testament writer warned, “Be sure your sin will find you out.”In other words, we cannot do wrong and get away with it. Better to ‘fess up and then humbly ask God to forgive us. After all, that’s why Jesus went to Calvary.

Doubleminded January 28, 2019

There are red and blue lobsters, and a lobster has been caught with an almost even split between red and blue. If lobsters can have an identity crisis, this one is in trouble. The Bible makes reference to people who are double minded too. They can’t decide to serve God or not. One Old Testament prophet asked his people the following very pertinent question on similar lines. “How long will you falter between two opinions? If the Lord is God, follow Him.” And He is. Jesus presented two wonderful opportunities which are open to all when He invited, “Come follow me.” And at another time, “Come unto me, all you who labour and are heavy burdened and I will give you rest. “ This could be your big decision day.

Pretending January 25, 2019

“Always remember where you came from.” That good advice was spoken by Canadian singer-songwriter Justin Bieber, several years ago, in his home town of Stratford Ontario. Trying to hide our past, or pretend we are something we are not is an exercise in futility. We don’t fool many, and we certainly don’t fool our Maker. David the Psalmist was inspired to write, “Lord, You have searched me and known me and are acquainted with all my thoughts.” Isaiah the prophet warned, about replacing truth with error, writing, “ Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil; Who put darkness for light, and light for darkness…” God made us all, He knows all our secrets and one day we must give account to Him. Please think about that today.
