Out with the Old and In with the New – June 11

The season of yard sales is about to come upon us. The idiom, “out with the old and in with the new” will be a reality for a number of vendors soon, as they get rid of what is not of value to them and use the money to invest into some that is. Something new! It is interesting, on a spiritual level, when a person receives the forgiveness of sin that God offers through Jesus Christ and enters into a personal relationship with God he/she experiences the idiom, “out with the old and in with the new”. This includes a person’s affections toward God, one’s lifestyle, everything! In the bible, in 2 Corinthians 5:17 it reads, Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.

Being Self-Sufficient is not Always a Good Thing – June 9

I have noticed more and more people are striving to be self-sufficient. Seeking to grow their own food, generate their own energy, and work at a home office or farm for their livelihood. Being self-sufficient can be a very good thing, but not always. Some people think being self-sufficient, in relation to God, is a good thing. It is the idea of striving to be a good person, or at least better than other people, and by striving to be good that will make them right with God. The bible tells us for someone who is in relationship with God, being self-sufficient was not the way they got there. Ephesians 2:8-9 reads, “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, 9 not of works, lest anyone should boast.”

Summer Vacation – June 7

The season of summer is just ahead of us. Many are planning on going on a vacation. Whether a person takes time off while staying at home or getting away there will be a break of one form or another. Something that we all know about vacation is it passes by quickly. It is here and then the next thing you know it is gone. It is interesting because the Bible describes our very lives as being here and then they are gone. In the book of 1 Peter our lives are referred to as, “our stay here.” It does not last long. In the book of James our lives are pictured as being like a vapor that appears for a little while and then vanishes away. Thankfully, the Bible tells us this life is not the end. In 1 John we are told a way in which life, real life can continue on, it is written, “And this is the testimony: that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son.”

You are what you think about – June 4

The weight loss market worldwide is worth over an estimated 70 billion dollars. It has also been estimated that the average adult will try over 126 different diets in their lifetime. The old adage, you are what you eat, seems to connect with people because so many people are focused on what they eat. What we eat effects how we feel but many would argued that what we think about is even more important. In the Bible, Philippians 4:8 reads, 8 Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things. I would encourage you to eat well but be sure to meditate on these things.

$1500 for Napping – June 2

Talk about a dream job. Mattress review company Eachnight offered to pay five people $1,500 each to take naps, every day, for 30 days. The selected nappers had to “take part in a variety of experiments testing out theories such as the best nap duration for feeling refreshed, the effects of napping on overall levels of fatigue, and the effects of napping on memory, motivation and productivity,” Eachnight said on its website. We know something napping does is it brings refreshment. In the Bible, in the book of Acts, a means of experiencing refreshment is made known to us in relation to placing one’s trust in Jesus, it reads, “Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, so that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord.

Lots of Questions – May 31

Some studies show 4-year-olds ask as many as 200-300 questions a day. A lot of parents would not argue with such a study. Questioning is part of our nature. Do you ever find yourself questioning God? Why would He allow this to happen or why did He not do that? The fact is if you believe there is a God you will question Him. A person can be in relationship with God, made possible by Jesus Christ, be what the Bible calls a child of God, and still question Him. We are given some insight from the book of Isaiah in chapter 55:8-9 regarding why we might find ourselves questioning God. It reads, “For My thoughts are not your thoughts, Nor are your ways My ways,” says the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts your thoughts

Right Place at the Right Time – May 28

Last month, two boys on the shoreline of the South Saskatchewan River were fortunate a runner by the name of Brad Pilon was passing by when one of them slipped into the water. An eight-year-old boy had slipped into the river and was being swept away by the current. Mr. Pilon went into the water, to retrieve the child, and swam them both back to safety. He was later quoted as saying, it was a case of being in the right place at the right time. The Bible in 2 Corinthians 6:2 it reads, “Behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.” Do you realize you are in the right place at the right time to get right with God, to receive the salvation God provides? Recognize your need, the need for your sins to be forgiven, trust in the payment Jesus made on the cross for your sins, seek God to enable you to see Him differently and sin differently and live a new life.

Cyber Security on the Rise – May 26

Unfortunately, with the pandemic, with so many people working from home, cyber crime is on the rise. David Shipley, of Beauceron Security has been quoted as saying, business has never been better for criminals. Something humanity has always been battling with, and this has never changed, has to do with sin. It is something everyone has been infected with. The Bible says in Romans 3:23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. The bible also tells us of the eventual effects of sin in Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death – meaning ultimately, eventually being separated from God. Thankfully the rest of that verse reads but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. The means to have this security applied to our lives is to recognize our need for forgiveness and trust in Jesus Christ for our salvation resulting in Him working in our lives.

A Man who was Mailed in a Crate – May 24

Last month a number of news agencies shared the story of Brian Robson who was mailed in a crate over 50 years ago. He desperately wanted to return home from Australia to Wales so he convinced two of his friends to put him in a crate with his suitcase, and mail him overseas. His trip in a crate, some time of which he was stored upside down, took five days, and when he finally got out, he was not in Wales but in the United States. It is interesting to consider how, in relation to heaven, so many people try to get there through different ways such as religion or good works but the Bible tells us there is only one way to get there. Jesus said in John 14:6 I am the way and the truth and the life, no one comes to the father but by me.

Vastness of the universe – May 21

Did you know the furthest visible regions of the universe are estimated to be around 46 billion light years away. That is a diameter of 96 billion light years. This is really only a guess by experts because we do not know exactly just how big the universe really is. We do know that its vastness is beyond what our minds can comprehend. It can actually hurt our minds to try. Something we do know, from the Bible, is that like the universe the wisdom and knowledge of God is beyond what we can comprehend. It is unfathomable! Romans 11:33 reads Oh the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and His ways past finding out.
