First Man to walk on the Moon March 7, 2018

“That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.” Those were the famous words of astronaut Neil Armstrong as he stepped on the moon on July 21, 1969. He was the first man to do so. As long as there are history books, Neil Armstrong will be remembered for taking one small step on a world beyond our own. Some day every person will go beyond the confines of this world. The bible teaches that our bodies will return to dust, but our souls and spirits will live on for eternity. How important it is to make our peace with God by acceptance of Christ’s sacrifice on the cross for us. Paul the Apostle wrote, “Now is the day of salvation,” reminding us that now is the time to get right with God. We have no guarantee of our life span or what tomorrow has in store for us. It may be later than we think.

One-hundred-million-dollar penthouse March 5, 2018

K city offered an octagon-shaped penthouse in midtown Manhattan that boasted three floors of living space, panoramic views of the city, six bedrooms, and nine bathrooms. The asking price- one hundred million dollars. Without a doubt some very rich person considered it a good bargain, purchased it, and has or will make money re-selling it. But there is a much better deal available. Just before He returned to His Father, Jesus said, “In my Father’s house are many mansions…I go to prepare a place for you…I will come again and take you to myself that where I am, there you may be also. But this wonderful place is not for sale, it is free. Because though “the wages of sin is death, the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” That offer is the best in all of history.

Our Remarkable World March 2, 2018

With such busy lives, it is easy to forget how truly amazing our world is. Did you know that the earth is approximately one hundred and ninety-seven million square miles? Were you aware that the earth travels through space at sixty-six thousand, seven hundred miles an hour, and oceans average two miles in depth? The Psalmist wrote, “The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims His handiwork.” John wrote in his gospel, referring to Christ, “All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made.” …to all who received Him, who believed in His name, He gave the right become the children of God…” Our Creator also went to the Cross to die for our sins, and invites us to receive Him into our lives and receive forgiveness, by a simple act of faith.

Dr. Nelles Silverthorne March 1, 2018

Dr. Nelles Silverthorne was for many years a consulting physician at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto and a research scientist. He made outstanding contributions to medicine. When whooping cough was a dreaded disease, he developed a vaccine for immunization against it. At a time when children were dying of measles-pneumonia, with the aid of an engineer, Dr. Silverthorne developed the first oxygen tent. But he says his greatest discovery ever, came when he became a Christian. Writing of the experience later, Silverthorne said, “Whoever reads this please be assured that really being born again is the greatest decision and the most thrilling experience you can have on earth.” Jesus said, “You must be born again…except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” This brilliant man knew that he needed God in his life. Is God in my life? In yours?

Quitting the Habit February 28, 2018

Most of us know someone who is trying to quit smoking. Researchers at the University of California in Los Angeles compared the physiological symptoms of twenty people who quit smoking cold turkey and twenty who cut back slowly. They found that withdrawal symptoms decreased more sharply for those who quit smoking suddenly. Interesting. Many plan one day to eventually make their peace with God and prepare for the next life. But trying to stop the smoking habit by merely cutting back, can be dangerous, because one may run out of time. Solomon, the world’s wisest man warned, “do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring forth.” Wisdom compels us to act quickly, by acknowledging our spiritual bankruptcy, since “there is none righteous, no not one,” and to invite Christ into our lives while there is still time

Careful How You Hear February 27, 2018

“You will never amount to much.” A German schoolmaster said that to a ten-year-old boy. The boy was Albert Einstein. A young woman broke up with her boyfriend, saying that “he would not ever amount to much.” His name was Billy Graham. Before planes began to fly, a prominent man said, “Flight by machines heavier than air is impractical, it is utterly impossible.” Fortunately, those to whom these negatives prophecies were made, did not allow what they heard to influence them. The Bible speaks much about hearing. Paul the Apostle wrote, “…Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God.” Jesus warned, “Be careful how you hear.” Another time he said, “Take heed what you hear…” Later He advised, “He who hears my Word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life.” We can believe everything Jesus said and act upon it.

A Still Small Voice February 26, 2018

We live in a world of text messaging, multiple email accounts, cell phones, hundreds of television channels and a smorgasbord of web information. Life is very challenging. Mark Milke, a columnist with Troy Media, in his article, “How to live the good life” concludes that “this generation needs to ignore the frenetic present long enough to learn from the past or from some still small voice.” Good advice Mark! And what could be more beneficial than listening to the still small voice of God. Jesus once said, “ Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me.” That door is the door of our lives, and His offer is to come in, forgive and give peace and happiness. He is still knocking today in many ways. What is our response?

God is Watching over us February 23, 2018

The little boy woke up about four o’clock in the morning, unable to sleep. He went to his father’s room and asked for a drink. Receiving it, he lay quietly for a while in his father’s bed. In the darkened room, the little boy asked, “Daddy have you got your face turned toward me? “Yes son” was the reply. Comforted, the child fell asleep. Sometimes our lives are like that. Like that little guy, we too can be sure that our Heavenly Father’s face is turned toward us. An Old Testament passage of the Bible encourages us with the words, “The Lord bless you and keep you; The Lord make His face shine upon you, and be gracious to you; The Lord lift up His countenance upon you, and give you peace.” When we are God’s children, even in the dark times of life, we can know that He watches over us. We become His children by acknowledging our wrong-doing and inviting Jesus into our lives.

Help, help. Anyone there February 21, 2018

“Help, help. Is anyone there?” Those were the desperate words of Mike Kelly, a Calgary trucker. It was December 30th, just after he had slammed into a big truck that stopped in the fast lane on a snowy highway. Kelly, fifty-two said, “The steering wheel and foot pedals came back and pinned my legs.” When he regained consciousness, he was positioned awkwardly within his toppled rig, as blood poured from his wounds. The temperature was minus 30 Celsius as the wind blew into the cab. Then help came as a man, seeing that Kelly was alive, opened the door of the damaged rig and made it inside. Someone called 911 and Kelly survived. This terrifying experience, and his cry for help illustrates our spiritual condition and need for outside help. And help is there for anyone who cries out, “God be merciful to me a sinner.” God promised, “Call unto me and I will answer you.” Will you call today?

Accounts not settled in October February 19, 2018

The Family Herald and Weekly Star ceased publication in September 1968, after almost a century of operation. On one occasion, a farmer, claiming to be an atheist, wrote a letter to the editor. He stated that most of the farmers in his community were Christians. He said that his lifestyle was decidedly non-Christian, and he believed the church-going Christian farmers foolishly denied themselves certain pleasures which he enjoyed. To prove the superiority of leaving God out of his life, he announced “This October my crops were the largest of any in our community.” The editor’s classic response was short and to the point. “Dear Sir, God does not settle all of His accounts in October.” Paul the Apostle had a warning for folks like that atheist farmer, when he wrote,“ boast not yourself of tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring forth,”
