To Err is Human, to forgive Divine March 30, 2018

Thirteen percent of the research articles published in the prestigious New England Journal of Medicine in one year recently, were found to be incorrect in their medical findings, involving drugs, screening tests and invasive procedures. While for centuries educated people believed and taught that the earth was flat, Isaiah the prophet was inspired to inform us that God “… sits on the “circle” of the earth…” The literal translation of the word circle is spherical- an exact description of earth’s shape. The Bible, was not intended to teach history, medicine or science, but whenever it touches on these subjects, it is always accurate. Best of all it explains how to be forgiven and receive eternal life. Please do not believe those who deny the truthfulness of this wonderful book. Read it. Follow its instructions. It will transform your life

Happiness March 28, 2018

Being happy, it seems, is good for your heart. A Harvard University review, published by the Psychological Bulletin concludes that being upbeat and optimistic just might help protect against heart disease. “A number of studies found the most optimistic people had half the risk of a first heart attack as compared to the least optimistic” said Julie Boehm of Harvard School of Public Health. This finding agrees with the wisest man who ever lived, King Solomon, who wrote in one of his proverbs, “A merry heart does good like a medicine.” The Psalmist wrote, “Happy is he whose hope is in the Lord.” Proverbs informs us that “whoever trusts in the Lord, happy is he.” And John, in his gospel explains the condition for this happiness, writing, “If you know these things, happy are you if you do them.”

Passing of Stephen Foster March 26, 2018

He was a routine admission to busy Bellevue Hospital, in New York City, on January 13,1864. He was an alcoholic, wanting only another drink. He died three days later- just thirty-seven years old, still unknown, considered just a bum from the Bowery. A friend identified him in the local morgue. His name, Stephen Foster. Before his tragic death, he wrote such famous songs as Oh! Susanna, Beautiful Dreamer, and My Old Kentucky Home. And many, like Stephen Foster, have lost hope, waiting for someone to reach out and extend a hand of kindness and help. But there is hope for all men and women. God’s love reaches out to all. The New Testament says, “The Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost. “If you are down and out today, please, reach out to Jesus. He’s reaching out to you.

A Tale of Two Dogs March 23, 2018

Two dogs, Baxter and Bailey got loose and ran away from their home in Sandwich Massachusetts. Baxter was found quickly, but there was no sign of Bailey. Then Bob Blackwell, the dogs’ owner got an idea. He took Baxter back to the area where he had been found and the dog led him through the woods straight to his brother Bailey, who had been caught by his entangled leash. A brotherly love story. The Bible also has a brotherly love story, not about dogs, but people. When Jesus began His ministry, one of the first disciples to follow Him was Andrew, and the first thing Andrew did was to find his own brother Peter, and we are told, “He brought him to Jesus.” Peter, became one of the church’s greatest leaders. The kindest thing we can do for another person is to introduce him or her to Jesus.

Treasure Trove in the Attic March 21, 2018

Karl Kissner of Defiance Ohio, picked up a cardboard box which had been in his grandfather’s attic for years. In the box he found hundreds of baseball cards bundled with twine. Some of the names were familiar Hall of Famers Ty Cobb, Cy Young and Honus Wagner. The seven hundred cards are from an extremely rare series, issued around 1910. Experts expected the cards to sell for two or three million dollars. This family had a treasure trove in their home and were unaware of it. Jesus spoke of treasure, warning people not to “lay up for themselves treasures on earth” which do not last. He encouraged instead “lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven” which last forever. When we have Christ in our lives we have heaven in our hearts, a treasure that will last forever, and an eternal home some day with Him.

Inaccurate Maps March 19, 2018

A recent book about backpacking in Canada warns that some maps are hastily printed without accurate data. Such mistakes can be tragic. Over the past three decades, scores of people have perished because they followed faulty maps. And in life’s journey it is vitally important that we have an accurate map, especially the map to the next life. Man’s philosophies vary and change. What is considered accurate or scientific information today, is often different than that of one hundred years ago. For example, while many erroneously believe there are many ways to heaven, Jesus states clearly in John’s gospel, “I am the way, the truth and the life, no one comes to the Father except through me.” The Bible is the reliable map for life’s journey. If we follow its directions we will never go wrong.

Albert Einstein Human Nature March 16, 2018

We are hearing shocking allegations of rape and sexual molestation on the part of famous people. Albert Einstein once wrote, “The psychological roots of war lie in the biologically based aggressive peculiarity of the human being. Whenever human beings confront one another, this aggressive tendency becomes manifest “True, but Mark in his gospel gives a more complete analysis of what is happening around us, writing, “From within, out of the heart of man come …sexual immorality…adultery…sensuality, envy, slander, pride, foolishness. All these evil things come from within…” While most of us are not participants in immorality, we all do have the same “aggressive peculiarity of the human being” of which Einstein speaks. The only answer to our sinful nature is a personal relationship with Jesus Christ,

Humanity’s Greatest Challenge March 14, 2018

On June 30, 1908, a forty-meter space asteroid exploded over Tunguska, Siberia. The earth trembled. Windows smashed in the nearest town over 60km away. Eighty million trees were flattened, covering an area bigger than greater London. Rolf ,head of the European space Operations Center in Germany says “the risk that earth will get hit in a devastating event one day is very high…We have no active planetary defense measures.” The United Nations calls this “humanity’s greatest challenge.” But it is not. The greatest challenge for each one of us is to be prepared for the inevitable meeting with our God. Amos warned, “Prepare to meet your God.” The only defense we need is faith in God, the Creator of the planets, steroids and stars and in Christ Who “died for our sins” at Calvary.

Passport Pictures March 12, 2018

It has been humorously said “if you can recognize yourself in your passport picture, you’re too old or too sick to travel.” Passport pictures are notoriously unflattering, because of some real or imagined physical distortion. But there is one place where we get an accurate picture of ourselves. James wrote in his New Testament book, “…if anyone is a hearer of the Word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. For he looks at himself and goes away and forgets what he is like.” When we look into the mirror of God’s Word and see what we really look like on the inside, there is a recognition of our fallen nature and spiritual needs, since “there is none righteous, no not one…” It is then that we become aware that we need to ask God for His mercy and forgiveness.

A Pen in the Stomach March 9, 2018

A British journal has reported the case of a seventy-six-year-old woman who visited her doctor complaining of stomach pains. It seems that several years ago she had put a pen in her mouth, fallen and swallowed it. Inadequate testing of that day did not detect it, but the modern technology picked it up. There is something wrong inside all of us- a fallen nature. Inadequate testing such as belief in a mythical divine spark reassures us that we are all God’s children and in no need of help from God. But the pain is still there. When we subject ourselves to the x-rays of God’s Word, our true spiritual condition is diagnosed, and Jesus, the Great Physician is ready to operate and bring healing. But we have a responsibility. He tells us, “Behold I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door I will come in.”
