Broken Treaties and Promises May 31, 2018

In a revealing article, the Wikipedia internet research source cites all the treaties and agreements formalized between nations and groups from 1283 B.C. through 2009. The writers call into question the usefulness of human agreement when most of them have been broken. No surprise. We are fallen creatures, spiritually dead. We are lost. The Bible, describing our moral and spiritual condition says, “The heart is deceitful above all things and desperately wicked.” This diagnosis gives little room for optimism or for trusting our fellow human beings. But while many people cannot be trusted, God can. He always keeps His word. And the most important area of trust is regarding His promise of eternal life. Here’s an example “…the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Just a Series of Accidents May 30, 2018

There is no personal God and all creation is just one gigantic accident. Those who believe that need to consider the following. Why do salmon swim upstream to spawn and die? Why do European eels know they should go to Bermuda to breed? Why do the earth and other planets stay in orbit? Who ordained that the human pancreas should maintain just the right level of sugar in the blood to supply energy? Just a series of accidents, right? There is no God, some people say. But what an amazing number of miracles must be explained. Only a personal intelligent God could do all this. He is the God of the Bible; He did it all. Genesis 1:1 is the only explanation of creation that makes sense. “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” Why would anyone believe that other unproven, unscientific theory?

Not Dead May 28, 2018

Famous evangelist Dr. Billy Graham died in February. One of his statements was repeated many times. “Someday, you will read or hear that Billy Graham is dead. Don’t you believe a word of it. I shall be more alive than I am now. I will just have changed my address. I will have gone into the presence of God.” He was repeating the words of another famous evangelist, Dwight L. Moody, spoken about one hundred years ago. They are correct, because Christ, the Son of God, declared when He was on earth, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live. And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die. The Apostle John explained, “These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life…” Great truth!

Rebuilt May 25, 2018

Lewis Roberts, from England, had hip replacements, five fractured vertebrae, a crushed pelvis and a damaged eye socket, because of a car accident. Roberts says doctors rebuilt him. We should be thankful for trained surgeons who can do these amazing medical procedures. But God, too performs life transforming operations every day. Only He does it all on the inside. Paul described God’s work as follows: “Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation…behold all things have become new.” So, when we recognize that we are broken spiritually and sincerely and humbly cry out to Jesus, the Great Physician, He freely gives us not just a rebuilt life, as Lewis Roberts received, but He makes us “new creations. “And there are no medical bills. “The gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”

Best Way to Quit May 23, 2018

Researchers at the University of California at Los Angeles compared the physiological and psychological symptoms of twenty people who quit smoking cold turkey and twenty who cut back slowly. They found that withdrawal symptoms decreased more sharply for those who quit smoking suddenly. Many plan one day to quit but just don’t get around to it. Likewise, many, realizing that we are all going to stand before God someday, plan to make their peace with God. The Bible urges us, “Seek the Lord while He may be found, call upon Him while He is near.” Sadly, many, thinking they will one day act, don’t get around to it until too late. Only 23% of people who turn their lives over to Christ do so after the age of 21. Those who are older need to give this some thought. It may be later than we think.

Needed – Someone Who Cares May 21, 2018

Doctor Seymour Perlin, an American psychiatrist, says the high rate of suicide among the elderly reflects society’s attitude toward the aging. Most older suicide victims usually live alone, are terminally ill, and cannot face going to the hospital or don’t want to burden their families with medical expenses. Ricardo Galvis, Director of a mental health centre in the District of Columbia, says the best method of treatment is to show them that someone cares. Perhaps today you feel that nobody cares for you. But there is someone who cares for you– Jesus Christ. He says, “Come to me, all you who labour and are heavy burdened, and I will give you rest.” Peter wrote, “cast all your care upon Him (Jesus), for He cares for you.” He proved it when He died on a cross to forgive our sins and prepare us for heaven.

Two Great Discoveries May 18, 2018

Sir James Simpson from Edinburgh, discovered the anaesthetic qualities of chloroform and obstetric anaesthesia. He opened the door to medical operations which were previously impossible. A bust of him was raised in St Andrew’s chapel with the words: “To whose genius and benevolence, the world owes the blessings derived from the use of chloroform for the relief of suffering”. He was a sincere Christian. Once he was asked, “Sir, what do you consider your greatest discovery?” He replied, “My greatest discovery was when I discovered I was a sinner in the sight of God.” He was then asked, “And now would you please tell me your second greatest discovery.” Simpson replied, ‘My second greatest discovery was when I discovered that Jesus died for a sinner like me.’” The fear of God is the beginning of wisdom.”

The World’s Greatest Kiss May 16, 2018

Asked on a television show what the difference is between kissing your sweetheart and your mother, one amused contestant responded, “About fifteen minutes.” But Vincent Torro, 34, and Louise Heath 26 claim the record for the world’s longest kiss ever: 96 hours and 32 minutes. If true, it is still not the world’s greatest kiss. The Psalmist wrote, “lovingkindness and truth have met together; righteousness and peace have kissed each other,” describing Jesus’ death on the cross for our sins. There the reality of our spiritual depravity and God’s love met. Our fallen sinful nature was made up for when Christ became our substitute. No doubt Vincent Torro and Louise Heath felt the effects of their long kiss. But the world will forever be affected by the kiss of God. Have you allowed it to affect your life? Please think about that today.

70th Anniversary of Israel’s Re-Birth May 14, 2018

Today is the 70th anniversary of the rebirth of Israel as a nation. 700 years before Christ, the Jewish people were scattered throughout the world, no longer a nation. But God inspired Old Testament prophets to announce that Israel would one day return to the land and become an independent nation again. He inspired Ezekiel in chapter 36, verse 24: “I will take you from the nations and gather you from all the countries and bring you into your own land.” In 1914 only 59,000 Jews lived in Palestine. It did not look good for Bible prophecy. Doubters laughed. But on May 14th, 1948, prophecy was fulfilled. Israel became a nation again, as God had promised. We can believe God’s promises, including Jesus’ words, “Behold I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in.”

Revealing Hurtful Hidden Things May 11, 2018

New surgical goggles developed by researchers at the University of Illinois and Washington University can spot cancer tissue where the human eye cannot. The goggles have an integrated camera that picks up infrared signals beneath the surface of the tissue. Sin has been likened to illness, infecting us all. We are spiritually fallen creatures. We cannot see cancer in the body with the human eye, but doctors with surgical goggles can. Similarly, we cannot see the cancer of sin that is us, but God can. He tells us that “all have sinned…” that “there is none righteous, no not one.” He warns that “the wages of sin is death.” But in that same verse, He promises hope, saying “… the gift of God is eternal life in Jesus Christ our Lord.” When we are “in Christ” by trusting Him as Saviour, He operates, and removes the cancer of sin.
