The Fear of God April 20, 2018

Nik Wallenda once said, “I would say the only thing I fear is God.” The Florida based daredevil, acrobat and heir to the famed flying Wallendas circus family is not afraid to do things most of us would not even consider. He was not afraid to walk across Niagara Falls on a tightrope or ride a bike on a high wire eighty meters above ground Nik Wallenda is an amazing person, and a Christian. He is also a wise man who fears the Lord, because the Bible tells us, “…fear the Lord and turn away from evil.” Thoughtful people will also fear the Lord for another reason. Luke, a Medical doctor whom God inspired to write in the book of Acts, ” …Anyone who fears Him (the Lord) and does righteousness is acceptable to Him. Doing what is right of course means acknowledging our spiritual poverty and asking Christ to be our Savior.

Daylight Saving Time April 18, 2018

Last month, most Canadian provinces switched to what is called Day Light Saving Time. The phrase “saving time” is an interesting concept. We can adjust the way we use our time, but we cannot “save” or “stop” time. It marches on relentlessly. The Bible has much to say about time, reminding us that “there is a season and a time to every purpose under heaven,” and it informs us that our “life is even a vapor, that appears for a little time and then vanishes away.” God’s Word also advises us to “redeem the time.” And the most important way time can be redeemed is by acknowledging our fallen sinful nature and tendency to do wrong. Then we are ready to make peace with God by inviting Christ into our lives, accepting the forgiveness and salvation which Jesus freely offers.

Spreading the Light April 16, 2018

Someone has observed, “There are two ways of spreading the light- be the candle or the mirror that reflects it.” Jesus once said, “I am the light of the world.” Another time He said to His disciples, “You are the light of the world “…Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.” When we accept Jesus as our Savior, obey Him and learn to be His disciples, His light is then reflected in us for all to see. How do we do this? By living lives that exemplify “love, joy peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. When we practice what we profess, honest seekers watch us at work, at home or in our business dealings. Many will then begin to ask questions which can bring them to our Savior.

Soul Satisfaction April 13, 2018

“I have become completely unemotional. I don’t feel sad and I feel no joy. I’m burned out and feel numb. What’s wrong with me?” That was an excerpt from a “Dear Abbey” column. The writer was asking, “Is that all there is to life?” Many feel this “world weariness” in our stress filled society.” King Solomon, of old put it as follows: “When I surveyed all that my hands had done, everything was meaningless.” The Psalmist made reference to this dissatisfaction of soul as follows: “Hungry and thirsty, their soul fainted in them. Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble and He delivered them out of their distresses…for He satisfies the longing soul and fills the hungry soul with goodness.” An old hymn correctly affirms that “Only Jesus can satisfy the soul.”

What Christians “Lose” April 11, 2018

I read recently of an elderly man who was asked if he had lost anything when he became a Christian. “Yes” he replied, “Yes…before, I drank to excess and quarreled with my wife. I lost all of that…I had a wicked heart and a hardened conscience- I lost them…I had a wife whose heart I had broken, who did without the necessities of life-all that is in the past. Yes, I lost many things when I invited Jesus into my life.” When we come to Christ, God gives us a new life. Paul explained, “Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he (or she) is a new creation. Old things have passed away, behold all things have become new.” Like the elderly gentleman I read about, when we become true and sincere Christians, God gives us, joy for sorrow, hope for hopelessness, new life for spiritual death. What a trade!

Freedom April 9, 2018

Winston Churchill once said, “All the great things in life are simple and many can be expressed in one word; freedom, justice, honor, duty, mercy, hope.” Mr. Churchill was correct. Unfortunately, sometimes in our technological world, we can become confused with too many words, and lose our focus. One of the greatest words you and I can ever reflect on is the word salvation, referring to the saving of our never dying souls. John, in the third chapter, the sixteenth verse of his gospel was inspired to describe salvation, and how to attain it, writing, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” Believing and acting on that timeless truth has transformed and continues to transform the lives of millions and millions of people.

Wings like Eagles April 6, 2018

Victor Hugo, author of the famous novel Les Miserable, once said, “Be as a bird perched on a frail branch that she feels bending beneath her; still she sings away, all the same, knowing she has wings.” Interestingly, many of us perch on frail bending branches, such as success, riches or popularity. The prophet Isaiah, in the Old Testament, wrote that “those who hope in the Lord…will soar on wings like eagles…” Thankfully, God gives us hope in this uncertain world, with such promises as the following, “I know the plans I have for you…plans to give you hope and a future…when you seek me with all your heart.” When things we perch on in this world let us down, we need to be sure that our hope is in the Lord because it is only then that we can soar above heartaches, sadness and trials, “on wings like eagles.”

Jackie Robinson April 4, 2018

At one time in his youth, Jackie Robinson began to run with a bad neighborhood gang. An older friend said to him, “It doesn’t take guts to follow the crowd, it takes courage to be willing to be different.” Jackie listened, traded his wishbone for a backbone and left the gang. He went on to become a sensational athlete, the first black baseball player in the Major leagues. All of us come to crossroads in our live. We too like Jackie Robinson must make decisions. The most important decision of all time is how we respond to Jesus’ invitation,” Come follow me…” Joshua in the Old Testament urged, “Choose this day whom you will serve.” Our Savior, the Lord Jesus offers forgiveness of sin, the gift of salvation, and eternal life. We all face the choice of either accepting or rejecting Him. Please give serious consideration to this today.

Doctor’s advice-use common sense April 2, 2018

In one of Dr. Gifford Jones’ columns, he discussed the high cost of what he called “self-inflicted disease”, He was referring to habits and life-styles that affect our health adversely. Jones says, “we can no longer be rewarded for foolish behavior. We need to exercise common sense.” Unfortunately, it seems that common sense seems to be in short supply these days not only for our physical well-being, but also our spiritual health. The Bible repeatedly advises us to act sensibly in view of our spiritual need. Paul said, “don’t be deceived, God is not mocked, for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap.” Jesus Himself said, “No man comes to the Father except through me.” Amos warned, “Prepare to meet your God”. Am I exercising common sense? Are you?

To Err is Human, to forgive Divine March 30, 2018

Thirteen percent of the research articles published in the prestigious New England Journal of Medicine in one year recently, were found to be incorrect in their medical findings, involving drugs, screening tests and invasive procedures. While for centuries educated people believed and taught that the earth was flat, Isaiah the prophet was inspired to inform us that God “… sits on the “circle” of the earth…” The literal translation of the word circle is spherical- an exact description of earth’s shape. The Bible, was not intended to teach history, medicine or science, but whenever it touches on these subjects, it is always accurate. Best of all it explains how to be forgiven and receive eternal life. Please do not believe those who deny the truthfulness of this wonderful book. Read it. Follow its instructions. It will transform your life
